HSS Sports Safety Program - MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF A COSTLY EPIDEMIC

Participating in sports and recreational activities provide physical and psychosocial health benefits that can last a lifetime. Unfortunately, these health benefits come with the risk of injury. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high school athletes suffer more than 2 million injuries each year in the United States. The CDC also notes that more than half of all sports injuries in children are preventable, but resources that teach coaches, parents, and athletes how to reduce the risk of injury are limited.

To address this issue, the HSS Sports Safety Program was established in 2015 with a generous donation from HSS Board member James Dinan and his wife, Elizabeth Miller, through the Dinan Family Foundation. Using a unique, public health approach to preserve the musculoskeletal health of young athletes, the HSS Sports Safety Program provides free education and training to young athletes and their coaches, teachers, parents, and sports administrators to help reduce the risk of preventable musculoskeletal injury.
