Wheatland Athletic Association has a variety of paid opportunities  for middle school, high school, college students and adults. These positions include, but are not limited to: basketball referees, basketball hall monitors, recreational soccer referees for both outdoor and indoor games, linesmen for outdoor soccer, baseball umpires and temporary workers for various administrative duties, storage room and field maintenance. Soccer Trainers and Instructional Referees

Recreational Soccer Instructional Referee

WAA is seeking qualified and enthusiastic soccer referees to work as “instructional referees” for our recreational soccer programs this spring. 

The Instructional referee will work with coaches and players for the first 15-30 min to demonstrate and teach a soccer skill or strategy.  The remaining 45-60 minutes of the session will be game play. 

Games are on Saturday’s and begin April 10th and continue for 6 weeks (make up dates be scheduled through May 2021). 
Kindergarten sessions are 60 minutes long, 1st-8th grade sessions are 75 minutes long. 
Sessions are held back to back with up to 4 sessions per field each Saturday. 
All fields are in the Naperville/Aurora area. 
Pay rate is $15/hour. 
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age by April 1, 2021.

Recreational Baseball & Softball Umpire

WAA Need YOU to Umpire for our Recreational Baseball and Softball Leagues 

Games begin in late May and continue through mid-July
Games are played in the Naperville/Aurora area 
Officials needed for 2nd grade through 8th grade leagues
Umpires select their games using the Official Finders website

WAA needs responsible High School or College age student workers for inventory and storage room maintenance. Additional requirements include the ability to climb stairs, small ladders and lift boxes and sports equipment.  Minimum age requirement for working is 16 years old.

WAA Basketball Hall Monitor   

Job Description:

  • Be watchful and assert yourself to help maintain order and safety in facility hallways and restrooms during scheduled activities.
  • Mainly weekend days and early evenings
  • Season begins in November
  • Minimum age required for Hall Monitoring is 16 years old.
  • Hall Monitors select their times using the Horizon Web Ref website

Basketball Referee 

 Job Description :

  • Must be 16 yrs or older. 
  • Certification a plus.
  • Season begins in November
  • Scrimmages or games are one hour long and start as early as 8:00 AM on Saturdays.   
  • Referees select their games using the Horizon Web Ref website
  • OFFICIAL FINDERS is the Basketball Referee Provider for WAA 

Referee will be working with children in grades K – 12. Referees are expected to officiate the game and instruct players on the rules of the game as necessary. Each referee is responsible for maintaining uniform, picking up and/or dropping off equipment at the WAA office and reporting any problems with games/coaches to the referee coordinator.

Referee Requirements


2. MANDATORY PAPERWORK: ALL referees and assistant referees MUST complete and submit the following paperwork to Jamie Boe in the WAA office before they will be assigned games. Having the paperwork completed to turn in at the meeting is strongly recommended.

ork permit documents- referees under the age of 16 MUST complete a work permit as required by the state of Illinois. The work permit process requires advanced planning. (See instructions.) Work permits are good for one calendar year. See note below regarding 13 year-olds and employment at WAA.

Special Rules for 13 year old soccer referee and linesmen:

House Bill 5996 makes a change to the Child Labor Law that allows a not-for-profit youth club, park district, municipal park or recreation department to hire 13 year olds to officiate youth athletic events providing the following criteria are met:
  • A parent or guardian of the officiating minor must be present while the minor is officiating.
  • The employer must obtain an employment certificate for the minor from the local high school or school district.
  • The minor is limited to 3 hours of work per day on school days and 4 hours of work on non-school days.
  • The minor may not officiate more than 10 hours per week and may not work past 9:00pm.
  • The officiating minor must be at least 3 years older than the youths participating in the sporting event or someone at least 16 years of age must be officiating the same event.

Volunteer Opportunities

Wheatland Athletic Association depends on volunteer parents for many of the coaching and assistant coaching positions in the program.  We appreciate all those who have helped out in the past and hope they will continue to give of their time for the future. Discounts for head coaches are given for most sports in the program.

If you have an interest in being a volunteer coach, please fill out the designated area on the sport registration form.  You will be contacted with instructions as to when pick up of the roster, information and equipment as needed for each sport.  In addition, if there is a coach meeting or clinic scheduled, you will be emailed with the details.
